Its mission is to encourage parents, relatives and friends of those struggling with autism to find a positive outlet by leading an active lifestyle that promotes awareness and raises funds for autism-related charities. Founder Sam Felsenfeld launched fundraising and awareness efforts by running 61 full marathons and two ultra marathons in 2010 and now works on a volunteer basis to develop programs to encourage participation nationwide. Through 2012, the Operation Jack Autism Foundation and Operation Jack Marathon have grossed approximately $180,000.
The race was created out of necessity to complete the the 2010 Operation Jack schedule and was intended to be a one-time event. Due to overwhelmingly positive feedback, it has become an annual race benefitting the Operation Jack Autism Foundation.
